Fortune Teller Baba Saga The Fortune teller Baba Saga begins where the Commander Red Saga ends (obviously). The team of Goku, Krillen, Yamcha, Puar, and Upa set off to go see the fortuneteller Baba at the advice of Roshi in order to locate the last dragon ball which, for some reason, can't be found with the Dragon Radar. When they arrive there they find out that in order to have their fortune read they have to pay a whole lot of money or fight and win against Baba's five fighters. Because they aren't rich and need the training, the gang decides to take on her five fighters.
Krillen is the first to face off against her fighters and his opponent is a vampire kick boxer named Fang. The fight begins and Fang manages to sink his teeth into Krillen's head, sucking the blood out of him. Krillen manages to break free but loses the fight when he gets tossed into the water surrounding the ring.
Now that Krillen has been eliminated, the group forms a plan and decides to have Puar and Upa team up to fight him. It seems like suicide until Upa eats a ton of garlic and starts breathing on Fang (being a vampire hates garlic). Fang turns into a bat to get away and goes for his trump card and bites Puar. The only problem is that before he does, Puar turns into a porcupine! Fang bites the needles and backs off. Upa then gets into a stance that makes him slightly resemble a cross, which freaks Fang out. He turns into a bat and tries to fly away, but Puar turns into a giant hand and slaps him down into the water to win the match.
Yamcha volunteers to fight next and is surprised to learn that his opponent is an invisible man! Because he can't see him, Yamcha spends most of this fight getting slapped around. Seeing his friend in need, Krillen sends Goku off on nimbus to get Master Roshi and a can of tomato soup. Goku flies off to retrieve them while Yamcha continues to get smacked around. He returns with both Master Roshi and Bulma. Master Roshi throws the tomato soup onto the invisible man, making him visible now! Now that he can see him, Yamcha easily defeats him. It's here that we learn that Baba is Roshi's older sister.
Baba now brings the group into her castle to get to the next arena, the Devil's Cauldron! It's two gargoyle statue's tongues pointing together for a platform over a hug vat of some kind of instant death soup. After a failed attempt to take out Goku (she tries to dump a ton of bricks on him, but he manages to block them all), Baba introduces Yamcha's next opponent, an immortal mummy! The fight is over quick, with the mummy beating Yamcha up. Yamcha is nearly dropped in the toxic soup, but is saved by Goku's power pole.
With Yamcha defeated, Goku steps up to the plate to take his turn with the mummy. As the fight starts, the mummy hits Goku with a few hard punches, but Goku's only response is "Thanks for the warm-up". It quickly becomes apparent that Goku is too fast for the mummy, as he dodges all of his attacks. That's when the mummy uses his special technique: his bandages! He uses his wrappings to tie up Goku and squeeze him. Unable to break free, Goku jumps over the side in what looks like a suicide attempt. However, Goku uses the soup to melt the bandages off him and break free. Getting back up to the platform, Goku attacks, hitting the mummy once, but knocking him unconscious. Goku wins.
Baba introduces the next opponent, a guy in a blue devil suit named Spike. Goku quickly beats on him, forcing him to use his special attack, the Devilmite Beams! The Devilmite Beams use the opponent's own negative energy against them to destroy them. We all know as fans that it's a waste of time because Goku is pure of heart (which is why he can ride the nimbus), so the attack fails and Goku defeats another one of her goons.
The final opponent is introduced and it's an old dead guy wearing a bunny mask to cover his face. The old guy (in a surprising move to Baba) requests that the fight take place outside and so it does. Goku's biggest concern however is that this fighter appears to be a nice guy as opposed to those who came before him. As the fight begins, their styles appear to be very similar. The old guy even uses the Kamehameha at one point! The fight continues until the old guy grabs Goku's tail, paralyzing the young warrior. The biggest question on everyone's minds was how did this guy know Goku's weakness? Roshi is the one to figure it out when he discovers that the old man is in fact Gohan, Goku's grandpa!
Gohan continues to punish Goku by yanking his tail, but it soon breaks off from the stress. Now that Goku has lost his only weakness, he prepares to fight, but Gohan submits! That's when Goku figures out that it's in fact his dead grandpa. We're treated to a heart-warming scene between the two, but Gohan reveals that he has to leave and go back to Otherworld. Before he does he listens to all of Goku's adventures and makes Goku promise to grow his tail to become stronger than ever.
With all five warriors defeated, Baba reads the gang's fortune and locates the dragon ball. It's in a car heading away from their direction. Goku immediately hops on nimbus and sets out after it. When he arrives we find out that it's Emperor Pilaf who was using an anti-radar box to hide the dragon ball. He also has some power suits to fight Goku with and knows of his weakness. When the fight starts, Goku outmatches them and when they go for his tail, they're surprised to find that it's been ripped off! Goku quickly disposes of them and gets the dragon ball from them.
With all seven dragon balls collected, Goku heads back to Baba's place to pick up Upa. They go back to the Land of Korin and awaken the dragon. Upa gives his wish and his father is brought back to life. The two reunite and say goodbye to Goku as he heads back to Baba's palace, but not before catching the four-star ball before it's tossed away.
Back at Baba's, Goku talks with Roshi about the upcoming tournament. Roshi reveals that he has nothing left to teach the boy and that he will start training Yamcha. Goku is to wander the world and let life do the training for the next three years, but he can't use nimbus to travel. They're going to meet up at the next world martial arts tournament. Goku says his goodbyes and starts off on his training. |
