Below is a list of commonly misspelled, misused, and misunderstood words in the Dragonball manga and Anime. Anime :Japanese Animation or cartoon. Anime is far different from American Cartoons. Chan ('Chan):In Japanese, this word is used in describing babies and females as cute. When used alongside an adult female - mostly just by other females - it implies that they are good friends. Chibi ('Cheb-ee):This is translated as Little, or small. In Japanese, it is a term used to refer to children; so therefore, Chibi Goku would be the Child Goku. Chou :The Kanji Toriyama used for Chou is the same he used for Super in Super Saiya-jin, so Chou could be translated as the Super form of something. Concerning Dragonball, when Goku uses the Chou Genki Dama, it is translated as the Super, or Ultimate, Spirit Bomb. Dai :Meaning Big, or in certain context, lead. This word is used to describe the head Kaio and Kaioshin. The name Dai Kaioshin would translate out as Lead or Big Kaioshin. Daizenshuu :Small books that go into detail about the Dragon Ball series. They are only available in Japanese. Jin :Meaning person of, this word is used when describing a single person from a specific race. It is used alongside the race name, like Arlia-jin, and means a person from the Arlian race. Ki :The life force, or power, that an organism contains. Some people believe that the stronger life force you have, the stronger you are. In the Dragon Ball world, a users ki determined how fast and how powerful the user was. Kun :This word is used when describing that a boy is young. Like Chan, when used with an adult male, it signifies a great friendship. Majin ('mah-jen):Translates to Demon or Demonic. If you add Majin as a prefix to someone's name, it means they are posessed. In Dragon Ball, Majin is added to those under Bibidi and Babidi's control. Manga :Japanese comic books. Japanese comics differ than that of American comics in that most Japanese comics are written for more mature audiences. Dragon Ball started out as a Manga and later became an Anime. Mirai :Translates out as Future. When used alongside a name, it signifies that that person is from the future. In Dragon Ball, it is used alongside Trunks and translates as Future Trunks. Mystic ('mis-tik):This adjective is used when refering to someone who has recieved Rou Dai Kaioshin's powerup (Mystic Gohan). Oozaru :The giant Were-monkey that a Saiya-jin with a tail can transform into upon viewing a full moon. Rou :The Kanji for this word means old man, or old age. In Dragon Ball, the Rou Dai Kaioshin would be translated out as The Old (as in old age) Lead Kaioshin. Sama ('saw-muh):This is used when speaking of someone with a very high status, and means that the speaker either worships or holds the person in very high respect. (When someone refers to Karin as Karin-Sama, it means that they respect him.) San :The equilivent of Mr. or Mrs. Sei :When used next to a word, it refers to it as a planet. Arliasei would translate out as Planet Arlia. Sennin ('sen-nen):Used to describe someone as a master. In Dragon Ball, it is used for martial arts masters. (ex. Kamesennin translates out as Turtle Master) Son ('sun):Goku's last name. In Japanese, the last name is stated before the first so someone Japanese would refer to you as Smith John instead of John Smith. |
